After the storyboarding brief we started with the concept art of the end product (the storybook). In this brief we imagined what our characters would look like and what the environment looks like as well.
My research consisted of a lot of watching of cartoon shows such as Gravity Falls and Adventure Time. I got my colour palette from a still in Gravity Falls. I wanted my concept art to be serious but still silly looking.

Our final product consisted of unpacking boards of each of our characters, objects and environments.
The Frog Alchemist and the Mercat. Two characters from the world of L'Epoque Magique.
The frog or "alchemist" is the town weirdo. Everyone thought he was crazy before the age of magic. Boots and coat are being worn to emphasise how odd he is.
The catmaid, mercat or "siren" has always been around, even throughout the Iron Age. No one heard her voice, however, due to their eternal sorrow.
"A woman laced in blues and reds". Drawn in red and blue to represent clothing. She grows wings which is the miracle in the story.
2. The peasant child who sees the angel. It is seen in the reflection of his eyes.
3. Everything found in the frog shack; potions, herbs, books, etc. Everything he needs.
Iron debris that is littered around the world due to the Iron Age. Rusted with time.
Frog shack, lake and the outskirts of the city.
Final environment:
- Outskirts of city can be seen
- At dusk; town looks eery and dark. lights shining from frog shack which puts emphasis on it
- Lake
This was one of my favourite briefs throughout this whole year. I got to experiment a lot and let my mind wander while I was creating my world. I really enjoy what I produced in the end as I spent a lot of time trying to get everything to look a certain way. I do feel like my unpacking boards could do with some work which I will take into consideration next time.
